Eating fruit and vegetables makes you happy

Australian researchers say eating large amounts of fruit and vegetables can make you happier.

The University of Queensland (UQ) study, involving more than 12,000 people, concluded that eating eight or more portions of fruit and vegetables a day improves mental well-being, Xinhua reported.

UQ health economics researcher Redzo Mujcic told local radio that current guidelines on fruit and vegetable consumption were mostly focused on physical health, and not on mental health.

Mujcic's study looked at people's choices on fruit and vegetables, and rated these against their levels of satisfaction, stress and vitality.

"It comes up the more you eat the better, but there's also some optimal points. Eating about five fruits and five vegetables (per day) makes us the happiest we can be in that case," he told Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) radio.

However, Mujcic said fewer than 10 percent of those surveyed were eating the optimal 10 servings per day.

Viagra may protect your heart

An ingredient in Viagra not only can enhance the pleasure between the sheets but can also protect your heart, a study has found.

A long-term daily treatment with Viagra can provide protection for the heart at different stages of heart disease with few side effects, the researchers reported.

"We found that this main ingredient in Viagra can be used as an effective, safe treatment for several patients with heart disease. Large clinical trials are now urgently needed to build on these encouraging findings," claimed lead study author Andrea Isidori from the Sapienza University of Rome, Italy.

Phosphodiesterase-5 inhibitor (PDE5i) is the main ingredient in Viagra and other drugs commonly used to treat erectile dysfunction.

The inhibitor blocks the enzyme PDE5, which prevents relaxation of smooth muscle tissue.

For the study, scientists carried out a meta-analysis of randomised controlled trials by searching for articles published between January 2004 and May 2014 to test the effectiveness of PDE5i in providing cardiac protection.

They identified 24 suitable trials involving 1622 patients from mixed populations who were treated with PDE5i or a placebo.

For the first time, they conducted a parallel analysis of the effects of the inhibitor on the size and shape of the heart and its performance.

The analysis shows that PDE5i prevented the heart from increasing in size and changing shape in patients suffering from left ventricular hypertrophy - a condition which causes thickening of the muscles in the left ventricle.

The inhibitor also improved heart performance in all patients with other heart conditions with no negative effect on the patients' blood pressure.

"The inhibitor could be reasonably administered to men who suffer from heart muscle thickening and early-stage heart failure," the authors concluded.

Regular fruit juice drinking could lead to high BP

A glass of fruit juice a day may not be as 'healthy' as previously thought as researchers found that those who regularly drink fruit juice have significantly higher blood pressure than those who have it occasionally.

With high amounts of sugar with negligible fibre, a daily glass of fruit juice could lead to high blood pressure and cardio-vascular disease, the researchers explained.

A daily glass of fruit juice leads to people having significantly higher central blood pressure - which can increase the risk of problems such as a heart attack or angina, the findings showed.

"Although juices may have essential vitamins, they commonly contain high amounts of sugar with negligible fibre," said Matthew Pase from the Swinburne University of Technology in Australia.

"Thus, frequent fruit juice consumption may be contributing to excessive sugar intake, typical of the Western population, exacerbating the prevalence of hyper-tension (high blood pressure) and cardio-vascular disease," Pase pointed out.

Fruit juice has also been blamed for helping fuel obesity and diabetes epidemics in Britain as a 250 ml serving contains 115 calories, the equivalent of seven teaspoons of sugar, Daily Mail reported.
